CHALLENGING PERFORMANCES
In 1999, Darijus Spakauskas took his position of
Music Director at Northern Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. There he
found a very nice Steinway piano, which could please larger audiences with its
beautiful sound. Working with a small group of church members, he launched the
Challenging Performances concert series, which is still flourishing today.
The purpose of the concerts was to be threefold
- to offer top quality classical music in a neighborhood setting for those who
prefer not to go downtown for concerts, to encourage children to develop a love
of classical music, and to give CCM students an opportunity to play for the
pure enjoyment of doing so in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere.
CP's performing artists have been mostly chosen from
Doctor of Music Arts, Artist Diploma or Master of Music candidates at the
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, at the University of Cincinnati.
Occationally, CCM faculty members have performed, and guest artists have
appeared. A number of students have been invited back by special request for
repeat performances as well.
From 1999 through 2008, the series has had more than
60 student performers and guest artists, and over 90 performances.
To continue the enjoyable qualities of these afternoons,
each concert has been followed by a reception in the church dining hall.
Audience members have been encouraged to meet and chat with performers, catch
up with friends, and enjoy wine, coffee and homemade treats provided by CP
board members.
